This week was really good.
We had stake conference last Sunday and got to hear from Elder Resume of the 70. On the Saturday night session, our mission president spoke. It was really funny to watch because he couldn't get his glasses out of his pocket so he had to hold his scripture up close to his face to read. He spoke again during the Sunday morning session. As he went up, he brought his scriptures and place them on the podium. We were sitting in the back in the overflow where there was a projector that showed the speaker so those of us in the back could see. The camera was angled in a way where you could clearly see everything that was on the podium. As President Mullen opened his scriptures you could clearly see that his iPhone was tucked in the pages. Then read the scriptures from his iPhone trying to subtly scroll down with his finger. Then when he was done, he closed the scriptures over his phone and took it off the podium.
We had a special training with the district leaders and zone leaders. Were have been instructed in how to teach the first discussion in a new way. Now, we will be teaching a separate lesson just about the Book of Mormon, in between the lesson on the Restoration and the Plan of Salvation. Those of us in mission leadership are testing the new lesson outline and then reporting how well it works to our mission president.
Part of the lesson is to simply go over what happens in the Book of Mormon and to read the first half of the first chapter with our investigators. The outline suggests not moving on to the Plan of Salvation until our investigators are reading the Book of Mormon from the beginning.
So far we have been practicing teaching the lesson to active members of the ward. When we felt comfortable enough with it, we decided to try it on an inactive member who always likes us to come over but always says "no" to any commitment we try to leave him. So we figured that it wouldn't hurt to teach him it says it probably wouldn't make a difference anyway.
So we went over there and after visiting him for a while, went on to teach him the lesson about the Book of Mormon. When we committed him to read from the beginning, he gave us a very unconvincing "Sure" We went back two days later and as soon as we went into his house, he immediately began to tell us about how much he is loving reading it and that as soon as we left the last time we were there, he picked it up just because he was curious but then couldn't' put it down. We spent a good amount of time at his house answering his questions and reading some of it with him. He wants us to come over every few days to talk about what he has read and to answer his questions.
That's it for the week!
